Reflections - Jiaying Wang

Hey Evelyn,

I might be the only problematic student you ever met and took your class twice. Thanks for keeping me in your class and finish it with me patiently. In last year, I felt it was such a difficult class since the politics is a sensitive topic in China and I have ignored that for 20 years. It was a habit for me to mute any proactive politics news around in order to keep the peace in my family. The education system in China is so interesting that it makes the young generation not to think about government and social issues too much and then follow their propaganda senselessly and hide our anger in our deep unconsciousness. In your class, it's a great opportunity to wake me up.

After having worked with Anthony on his anatomy of a struggle and designed a set for a film about African American single mother, I found my entering point of activism. It's the people, the lovely ones living around us. I care about normal people's everyday struggle and everyday living condition. I want to learn activism tools and use my art and design to make the invisible visible, like what JR is doing. I want to create artworks not only have a good out looking but also have a deep social content and evocative meaning. So why art matter? Because it can turn people's perception around. As an artist, I want to do research as an anthologist learning the textures and marks of beautiful human beings and their communities.  Also, I intend to create new works as gifts giving to different people around the world. You taught us how to make artwork into statements with deeper meaning.

I'm glad that I can take your class again and develop my project with you.

I had a meeting with Melissa last week. It was more like a counseling. She likes my project a lot and approved that it will be an effective project from a psychology perspective. She suggests me to combined my experience at CalArts to find the cause of depression for a young artist. We all have pressures. As an artist community, we may have very similar concerns. Moreover, she suggested me to invite my audience to the place and let them explore the space with their curiosities. I don't need to make rules and force my audience to follow the guides. It's a big difference between "invite" and "force."

I like to keep developing my project with you. Although I am going to graduate this semester, I will be around the campus. Keep in touch!

A new update to my project:
