My biggest learning from this class came from looking at alternative models of art-making and art-displaying in Cuba. Hegemonic thinking works like gravity in that every effort to depart from the binding ground pulls you downward as if there's no escape. But reimagining every operation of art-making such as Cuban street performance as explained by Coco Fusco or erasing the division between the spectator and the actor like Augusto Boal are simple mental departures from what we've been trained to believe as inherent. And understanding the plausibility of paradigm shifts because all it takes is the radical courage to question engrained structures is powerful.
I wish there could be a second part to this class where we collectively reconceptualize our own CalArts community and employ the learned paradigm shifts. I think we can generate a lot of momentum and address the unbalance we see at large also pressing us on campus.
