Braiding Sweetgrass

Interdependence.  The Thanksgiving Address is a celebration of our mother nature and a reminder of our duty to respect and protect all the creations. The words are simple yet powerful. The Thanksgiving Address makes me feel wealthy and calm, knowing that everything that I need to sustain my well-being can all be found in nature and that I could be a part of a paradigm which doesn’t feed off from material insecurity. When raising a pledge to the Thanksgiving Address, it does not ask us to pledge our loyalty to a republic, a political entity, instead, it acknowledges the human and non-human as one collective and what we are gifted are also our duties. It’s sad that we have the gifts to make great impacts on this world, and yet the most of us are so occupied with dealing our own desires that we overlook the responsibilities we should have taken on. The Thanksgiving Address reunites our minds and shows us how the world was meant to be through expressing gratitude, and hopefully, this cycle of reciprocity will lead us to a world of coexistence of all creations.
