Braiding Sweetgrass; Maya Brattkus

“It’s not exactly liberty if they force you to say it.”

When we step outside of the hierarchical everyday routines that we have come to get used to and comfortable with, we can see the ridiculous nature of it. But it’s much easier to slip back into the comfort and safety of following and to push aside what makes you uncomfortable. To be just and courageous, to create a pocket of justice, takes extreme effort. After reading this chapter I had the immediate desire to stop making my life based around materialism, to stop equating happiness with stuff, to simply rely on gratitude as a base for happiness; but as someone who has been sucked deep into the hierarchical norms of society and made to believe and feel happiness through things and marketing, the nice thought quickly dissipated.
