Points Made in the Articles:

1. President Obama and Raul Castro took large steps in an effort to restore bilateral relations between the two countries in 2015. It has been broken down into several elements.

2. The first element was the step was the effort to re-establish diplomatic relations, and was completed by July of 2015.

3. The second element expanded the set of classifications of U.S. citizens and permanent residents who are allowed to visit Cuba.

4. The third element, in an attempt to activate agricultural trade between the two, created more exemptions to the embargo on U.S. exports to Cuba.

5. The fourth element relaxed allowances on remittances to Cuba. Remittances are sums sent home to Cuba from Cuban workers in the U.S.

6. The fifth element allows for authorized transactions between Cuba and the U.S.

7. The sixth element was a declaration of the U.S. to aid in the expansion of Internet access to the Cuban population.

8. The seventh element updated the application of U.S. sanctions on Cuba in third countries.

9. Trump has directed the U.S. Treasury and Commerce Departments to plan to reinstate the travel ban on U.S. citizens to Cuba, until all political prisoners are freed and Cuba holds free and fair elections, along with other rights-related conditions.

10. Raul Castro has announced that he will step down at the end of his second term in 2018, and municipal elections are scheduled for late November of 2017.

1. As tension seems to be mounting again between the two countries, how do we, as individuals in the U.S. and members of the community, begin to take steps to creating interpersonal relationships with those in Cuba?

2. How do we keep lines of communication open with a Government that is constantly trying to keep those lines closed?

3. What is the best way to ease tensions between two countries which historically, and not even that far back in history, have had such extreme tensions and hold strong mistrust for one another?

4. How has the enforced isolation of Cuba by the U.S. affected individuals living in Cuba? In the U.S.?

5. What are the greatest ways in which our two countries can benefit from one another, on an interpersonal and cultural level?

6. What have been the positive effects of the lift on the travel ban for both countries?

7. What have been the negative effects of the lift on the travel ban for both countries?

8. What is the long-term overall goal of Acercamiento?

9. Are the Acercamiento pieces that the group brings fully formed upon arrival, or do the pieces get further developed through collaboration with Cuban artists?

10. What was the best food that the group ate on the last trip?
