Shamell Bell Workshop by Diana Teixeira

Shamell  Bell Workshop
The day of the workshop I decided to wear my "Black Lives Matter" t-shirt, without knowing the extensive involvement that Shamell Bell had in the movement. While explaining her Activism through Dance project, she made us feel comfortable and free to speak our minds. She made several exercises for people to get to know each other.  And from the beginning I felt a deep admiration and connection to this woman, who had the ability to show her vulnerabilities and at the same time state firmly her beliefs. Shamell Bell purpose wasn't to support or empathize, her purpose was to fight against those people and institutions that seek to harm her and her loved ones. The workshop made me reflect on the roles we take we respect to the injustices committed around and it remind me that change requires a fight, a real fight. Because as long as the other side is willing to stand against us we must stand too in order to defend the people we love. And we must remember that we are fighting for the people we love. Because is easy to overlook your own beliefs to find comfort, but you will never overlook the lives of those who you love.
