Project Statement:
How many times do you feel lonely every week? Do you have anxiety or depression? Do you struggle with your life? Here is a space where you can stop by and have a rest.
The project is a pop-up mobile space with live music, video projection and performance. The project focuses on the mental issues of modern society and is inspired by behavioral therapy and psychoanalysis.
We call for people with different backgrounds to gather and share. The project includes two sections: a performance space and a therapy workshop, which is a cycle of expressing, resonance, connecting and healing. In each workshop, personal stories from the audience will be collected, and later performed by dancers through their body movements. The pop-up installation will be moved through different neighborhoods in LA, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.
In the early stage of the development, all the artist have to do massive research about the ethnography of each city and behavior therapy. I have the connection with Nicole Rousso-Schindler who is an anthologist teaching Pursuing Happiness at CalArts, Aga Szostakowska who is a Poland Artist who studies the relationship between physical and mental space. In addition, we can also make the connection with UCLA Psychology Clinic for collaboration. As the scenic designer of the project, I want to discover how perceptions change and influenced by the physical space. Our project will benefit the local people who struggle with everyday life but have no place to express or release their pain. Also, the cases we collect from the audience can be shared with local Psychology Clinic for further study.
Extra thinking: I recently had a conversation with a director about his project about Happy Med Treatment. He talked about his trip to a Club Med resort in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. That resort was situated far away from the city in a paradisiacal location where most guests remained throughout their stay. In this all-inclusive resort guests pay for their expenses upfront in order to enjoy their vacation without worries and limitations. The Club Med conceals the guests’ real worries from the public and their hidden troubles are only
revealed in privacy. We think and raise questions about this tourist space whether really solve guests problem or just create an air bubble for them to escape instead of facing their real issues. Tourist is a big subject nowadays and many people see it as a way to heal and escape from their busy work. This topic is interesting to think about and combine with my therapy project.
