I have been talking in my past posts about the situation of AfroAmerican and AfroCuban Women. What are their lives alike and how are they different. I am very interested in their relationship with their bodies and the daily performance of them. One of the aspects that I have been researching in the performance of the body is dance. In their relationship with the Western culture, the Afrodiasporean women body has been raped, harassed and trapped. One of the aesthetics that in my opinion has dominated the Afrodiasporean body (particularly in the women body) is the ballet.
My (mine and Dianas) proposal for the final project is a choreography about an Afro ballet dancer that one day, during a rehearsal, becomes possessed by a god (through various percussion instruments) who extracts the chain that is inside her that doesn't allow her to dance like her ancestors. At the end the god triumphs and frees the dancer. There are several indicators of the ballet constriction in the choreography, for example, the metal chain, the corset, the pointe shoes, etc. While the choreography progresses the dancer will get rid of this items in her fight for freedom.
I think it important to talk about about this problematic specially in Cuba and the US where the has been a long history of fighting for the ownership (or freedom) of the own human body.
