El Acercamiento Project-Sebastian Salfate

Since I arrive to the United States I have been thinking around the cultural idea of money in this country. How it is used for social interaction, how it is a dream to achieve or simply how it is culturally ingrained in the built and "utopian" model that the USA pretend to build.
In this context I developed an idea that spoke about this strong cultural reference. Now, during the few weeks in the class I have realized that the content of this idea would be much more interesting to explore through ideological contrast, as it can be activated more precisely by the juxtaposition that think about the monetary systems from different spectrums. In this sense my idea would be activated by the dialogue between Cuba and the US as two nations that contradicts their approach to money as a solidification of freedom and wealth. At the same time, I wanted to add some socially realted work to my piece, so I can make my work helpfull for others without approaching it as some sort of relational or  "assistentialist" art. I also would like to be open to transform my work trhough the casual interaction with people as I think that would be impossible to me to actually achieve to understand and solve a problem that the Cuban comunity could have and that I can actually forseen. Also my way of approaching any sort of problem solving would be in a rather vernacular and direct form more than through pretending that I am solving social, ideological or trascendental problems either trhough my art or my 7 days residence there.

My idea consist first in the intervention of a car battery so it can transform from a DC current to an AC. This will give me the possibility to work independently around the city with electric device in the street. The first intervention will be a electric sign that can be hang and placed in every part of the city. The sign will contain different words, slangs and signifiers of the concept of money. Words as banks, bones, cheese and cream will be passing by constantly demonstrating the the perpetuity of money in the american ideology. The battery will also be the source of electricity for different action that will try to supply basic cultural necessities for the people of Cuba. Printings of censored books, movie screenings, CD burning and more would are part of the activities that will be produced by this pop up "cyber" that will also react to the necessities presented in situ. The last part of the piece would be a floating luggage. The luggage will be floating by been tied to a bunch of party balloons (as many as needed to sustain it in the air). This part of the piece is more of a rather poetic factor that I want to add to the piece.
