While reading this article I became more aware of the fact that I had no idea- not one clue- about what exactly happened when the Obama administration decided to strengthen its ties with Cuba. Something that I found interesting was that President Obama himself didn't negotiate the deals made with Cuba and Castro did the same. It was all done under the table by their associates- and it also took a long time to settle on a deal that pleased both sides. Something that was really surprising was the value of American lives as well as Cuban lives- how much Cuba wanted back those who where imprisoned in America and vice versa.
Im very confused by the end of this article more specifically when "No one at the Pentagon was “read in.” Although Kerry was eventually brought into the loop, “we kept it fairly tight on our side, and the Cubans, I think, did the same on their side,” a senior US official said". I don't understand what exactly it is that they are talking about what it was that Obama didn't want Clinton to do that Kerry understood not to do.
Questions:
1- Why did Obama want to strengthen its ties with Cuba so quickly into his presidency?
2- How important was Allan Gross and why?
3- What strength comes with having these prisoners stay as prisoners?
4- What if Obama didn't release the last three members of the Cuba Five? What would've been different about the deal?
5- What pushed Obama to be the "president who really wanted to do it"? What did he think he was going to gain from this for his country?
