Project Seed Ideas- 10/04, 11/14
When thinking of the Project I was really drawn to the idea of something that the everyday person can affect the everyday person. I also hated the idea of this piece is a gallery space, the reason is that the people who go to gallery spaces are fellow artists typically not the everyday person. When the embargo was lifted I was really drawn to this idea of two worlds connecting. Just because the USA seems to have viewed Cuba as a treat or an exotic destination for tourist. To hold a Cuban cigar was a state of power one can have. Even now with Trump restriction on the travels to Cuba, it seems to create an even more powerful need to go there. I was interested in this idea of people writing letters to each other because it seems like the act of writing something down has more energy than saying something or hearing something or even viewing something. When you write something it is something that you have taken the time to disgust what it is you need to say then the reader also has to take the time to disgust what there psychical holding and reading. I was having a hard time finding articles about what I actually wanted to know in Cuba, there seems to be such a big emphasis on the political side of what happening between these two places, but nothing on the social side. I wish there was more on the social views of children with learning disabilities or this dance of trading that you talk about in class when there is no money to go around. That what I want to focus this project on, the little things the communities so that no one talks about.
After our talk and after talking to Lauren it seems that the best idea would be to have people from both sides answer a question that is Mundane and simple, something along the lines of “What is your favorite part of the day? Worst?” something small enough where someone can write a quick response to it but also I feel like it is a board enough. I feel like that could be something that causes people to write various answers and hopefully show that there is something hidden and unspoken in the community. I am worried that people will not write, or would rather write to there loved ones that they can’t talk to as much. I also was thinking of playing with the idea of creating a pop-up post office where people have the choice of mailing a letter to anyone and we would take care of that. I also am afraid if no one choices to writes then we can’t create a performance piece out of it, I really want to somehow retell highlights of some stories that we will meet along the way. There are a lot of variables that can happen which both makes this project exciting but also we must keep things together stronger to make sure it doesn’t go off the rail.
