Embrace of Multiplicity
Sabina Arias
I've been thinking more about my project idea and I'm still working on the concept of a mosaic as a visual representation of two cultures that encompass a lot of polarity and points of intersection. What I want to change from my initial idea is that I want the topic of the visual piece to be more oriented towards a synesthetic bodily experience focusing on the idea of the ocean and all of the methaphors that it illuminates for both the US and Cuba. The idea of the sea serve as a metaphor for things such as 1. a prision- a body of water too big to defy, 2. vehicle through which one can travel from one place to another and that connects the whole world, 3. An fluid body that bears the historic weight of colonization within itself...etc. I want to use these metaphors to create a total of 5-10 collective mosaics that include all of these different interpretations of how the sea separates and connects the US and Cuba at the same time.
My intention is to collaborate with students from the San Alejandro arts school in La Habana and with CAlarts artists so that the pieces are a collaboration. I would like this piece to also be joined by a musical collaboration between any Calartians and Cuban music students from el Isa.
