Guillermo Gomez Peña- Diana Teixeira

Listening to Guillermo Gomez Peña is incredibly liberating and at the same time very daunting. Gomez Peña's performance made me reflect on my experience as an immigrant. I vividly remember arriving to this strange country in 2004 and being completely lost. Throughout  the years I shaped myself into the "Good Immigrant." I learned to speak english as best as I could, I climbed the ladder of immigrant jobs, and trying to play second generation immigrant I went to school to become a doctor. Now I'm here at CalArts rebelling against the "Good Immigrant" stereotype and Gomez Peña is the perfect role model of rebellion and radicalism. I love listening to him speak about the "Monolingual America," and hearing parts of his performance only in Spanish as an act of defiance and enticement. Seeing Gomez Peña reminded me of that Latina pride that I must never forget and that carelessness to being call crazy that I must develop.
