The most memorable part of this article was when the author talks about expressing gratitude as a revolutionary idea in a consumer society. And it is completely true that expressing our gratitude for all that we have will make us feel wealthy rather than poor or incomplete. Fighting off the tentacles of consumerism is something that I deal with personally and everyday. As females we are taught that we need numerous beauty products and clothes that in reality we don't need. And all of the products and clothes we buy are often manufactured in other countries at the expense of other women's lives and safety. In my attempt to divert from fast fashion last year I learned how to sew and tried making myself some clothing. Although I still purchase some clothing, as little as possible and usually second hand clothing, I like to think that the whole experience has made me more thankful about all of the processes and materials it takes for me to have that new t-shirt. It is important to acknowledge what we have and the work that goes into obtaining what we have, no only to value our material stuff, but also to simply live happier lives. As Buddhist proverbs often say, the wealthiest person is not the one who has the most, but the one that need the least.
