Braiding Sweetgrass by Gabriel Bennett

The Thanksgiving Address seems like a great alternative to the pledge of allegiance. Unfortunately, it makes sense that U.S. capitalist culture would forgo a pledge of gratitude for a pledge of devotion to state. This makes me think a lot about how much better things could be if the values outlined in the Thanksgiving Address were still the foundation of our society. “contentment is a radical proposition” the most confrontational idea to a capitalist society is that the earth can provide all that we need, thus eliminating a need for gross over-consumption. Recognizing our shared existence and reliance on this earth seems like an infinitely important step in living a happy harmonious life. We use our differences to perpetuate war and hatred, instead of using them to learn and grow together as a planet. The relationship between gifts and personal responsibility resonates with me. Being given responsibilities makes one feel like their talents are recognized and appreciated. Reading this passage makes me think about how English colonialism spoiled the value system of the ‘developed world’, and did away with respect and appreciation for mother earth. This passage seems like a great 'tool' in any toolbox for revolution.
