Project Idea Seeds - Micah Mora

So, I was really considering crafting a movement piece that revolves around the expansive ocean that separates Cuba and the U.S. and the many lives that have been lost in their conflicts, as well as from those who have tried to forge their own paths by attempting the dangerous voyage across. This isn't a piece about those who have managed to surpass the ocean nor solely based on those who have representationally lost their lives; instead, I want to try to showcase the humanness that bonds us together and how we are now tied to Cuba in some form or another, and vice versa.

I still have not decided on a choice of music, or if I even want to incorporate music or leave the only sounds heard to those of the performers themselves.

I am also torn between white or blue lights or a mixture of both throughout the piece. I don't want any direct spotlights ever but more of a faded washout of lights.

I want all the dancers to be wearing full white outfits of their choice. Preferably, I would like the performers clothing options to be of a simpler form, so as long as the clothes they wear are around cotton and linen, and very casual attire.

I originally wanted to work with just to dancers, but I can open up the concept to involve several.

I want dancers on either side of a space. Covering the entire space, I would like to use something like canvas, or paper to cover the entire floor which the dancers will be occupying throughout the piece.

Starting at opposite ends, I want the dancers to begin a movement through the space attempting to tread across to the other side. Along their path they will encounter other dancers that will at times move together as one, at other times, one dancer may become an obstacle for the other, and other times, a dancer may even be the lifeboat that helps a dancer make their way across the entire floor.

I want to incorporate blue paint in the piece. I don't exactly know how, but as the dancers move across the space I want the paint to be smeared across themselves or other dancers they encounter, or perhaps even on the floor, which will symbolize the ocean separating U.S. and Cuba.

At the end of the piece, I want the dancers as well as the space they have occupied to become a living piece of art created each and every time the piece is performed.

I also want the dancers to end throughout the space occupying what is the Cuba side, the U.S. side, and the ocean, and all in some form will be smeared with blue paint in some from or another, creating this bond and connection from all parties that shows the struggles all face, and how that in turn connects everyone still. The end leaves us with the "resolution?" who is Cuban and who is American, or were there really ever either? The sides will begin to blend and I hope the audience will be left with their own list of questions and answers.
