Maquilapolis - Micah Mora
Such a touching film! It truly hits me sharply in the stomach to know that things like this still happen on such grand proportions. It hurts more to know that these money guzzling companies are too cheap to maintain healthy work conditions, and ensure safe working areas for their employees. And it's even more frighteningly that those who should be held responsible were also able to find easy escape routes out of paying for their ramifications.
I thought it was really effective that they chose to show women of different backgrounds and body types in the many work locations, to show that they are many and all unique, but they are all being oppressed by the same individuals. I also thought beautiful touches to incorporate personal items like that old-fashioned Mexican aprons used by most all Mexican females in Mexico at some point in their lives. That alone shows the generational connection they all have, as well as the hard-work and dedication each of them place on their own families and the well-being of their families.
I think the most valuable piece of information in the video was how they addressed their text. Every time they had the women speak, they had them talk about not only the injustices they have each faced, but also how as human being they deserve certain rights afforded to all: health, fair income, safe working environments, and a healthy surrounding environment free of pollutions and chemicals. Each woman addressed how they were learning the law system to better protect themselves, and to ensure they are treated fairly. This key information I think was the cornerstone of this videos messages, because it showed that in order to have change occur one must go out and seek how; together they would learn how to make the changes they wanted.
