I was certainly previously ignorant to these such working conditions. The film told a beautifully, compelling story as well as activated an important message that needed to be heard. I loved the opening credits of the choreographed movement of the working actions, for me that really examined the repetitive notions of the factory as well as the exploitation of these women.
The piece itself is incredibly personal and accessible. The woman who filmed it shares with us her family and home as well as her experienced within the factories. Being in a first world country and experiencing the stories of these women also struck a chord with me as we are the consumers of the products that they are making thus potentially part of the reasoning behind their poor conditions. It shocked me the amount of injuries that these women -many of them single mothers- undergo.
It appalls me that so much that is consumed by first world countries come from people who cannot afford human rights such as insurance or healthcare and live in unacceptable conditions where disease is easily spread due to lack of sanitation.
In order to properly explore this story and to engage the audience members, the artist employed many different mechanisms of art making but the main factor which I found engaged me the most was the interviews with each woman as the close up shot from the camera made it so incredibly personable and intimate. Every moment of emotion was told as well as the important factor of the VOICE of each woman to be heard. In my own project I am exploring the voice and body of women and the exploitation of those factors, it was incredibly inspiring to hear these stories and to hear the voices of women strong against the exploitation they are encountering.
