Hola! My name is Sabina Estrella Arias Rios. I like to go by Estrella or Sabina. I am a singer, bass player and visual artist born in San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico. I am currently completing my 3rd year as a BFA interschool music/art student at Calarts. I was born in 1993 in a family of musicians, artists, and environmentalists. I was exposed to a lot of Mexican regional music growing up such as Son Jarocho, from the Gulf of Mexico.
Son Jarocho is a musical genre that has its origins in the Baroque music played in the Spanish Courts during the 16th and 17th centuries of colonial Mexico. It was then taken up by the mestizos and mulatos and eventually evolved into a popular music played for community gatherings called Fandangos. Nowadays it has become extremely popular and provides a great platform for improvisation, exploration and re-assertion of Mexican identity. I love this music and it informs much of my musical creativity.
In 2012, I moved to Havana, Cuba, to study classical upright bass at the Instituto Superior de Arte. A year later, I got a scholarship to attend Lafaro Jazz Institute, so I moved to Mexico City to study improvised music. Last year I started an ensemble called Primero Sueño, named after the famous poem by the Mexican baroque poet, Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz. Primero Sueño is a feminist, multicultural ensemble that merges Mexican regional influences with a Baroque musicality and jazz influence. Last year we were interviewed for a KCRW radio show called Take Two after recording at Capitol Records for the 2017 Calarts jazz CD. I love animals art and music and Cuba is my favorite place on Earth.
